Those stats show the real deal. One thing I'm concerned about...Only a 23% increase in zwieback production? I am thoroughly disappointed. I was expecting at least 31%
Yes, the slow growth in GZP (gross zweiback production) is disturbing, but it's also an interesting lesson in economics.
It can be traced to higher-than-average wheat flour prices, which are higher because of a curious (but usually unimportant) similarity to "wheat flower," the wheat flower being the flower of choice for the International Society for Homonyms And Poor Spelling (ISHAPS).
This society, as you might guess, is necessarily the largest single consumer of the world's wheat flower supply, but is also *un*necessarily one of the largest consumers of the world's wheat flour supply, as well. This is especially so in years ending in 8, in which they hold their decennial "I ate in X8" convention (X being the year of the decade).
An ISHAPS I8 convention is typically a saturnalia of such foods as 1 Carrot Diamonds, Gangsta Wraps, and Green Pee Soup (don't ask). Once the convention is over (late November), ISHAPS members will return to their regular wheat flour consumption rates, prices will fall, and Mennonites everywhere will be able to bake zweiback with renewed vigor.
